Gary Romano

Venture Partner

Gary brings more than 25 years of neuroscience drug development experience to SV as a Venture Partner in the Dementia Discovery Fund team.

Gary currently serves as scientific advisor to biotechnology companies and holds board positions on several life science foundations.

Previously, he was Chief Medical Officer in biotech, including at Alector where he led clinical stage programs focused on leveraging the brain’s innate immune system to treat neurodegenerative diseases; and at Passage Bio, where he led gene therapy programs for the treatment of pediatric and adult central nervous system disorders.

Gary held several leadership roles at Janssen Pharmaceuticals, as the head of clinical development for neurodegenerative diseases, head of neuroscience biomarkers, and head of early clinical development for analgesics. Before joining J&J, he held positions of increasing responsibility in clinical neuroscience and experimental medicine at Merck Research Laboratories.

He holds an adjunct clinical appointment in neurology at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he continues to practice neurology in the memory disorders clinic.

BA in Biology, Trinity College; PhD, The Rockefeller University; MD, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Post-graduate internal medicine, neurology and neuromuscular disease, University of Pennsylvania.
